System: JAAPUI HorecaHunter Management Application

Reporter: Beta Test Customer

Issue Description:

The web application was experiencing regular outages in the production environment. Users received error messages when trying to log in or view restaurant data. The log files showed the error message: "MySQL Connection not available."

Root Cause:

The database server (MySQL) automatically terminates connections that remain inactive for too long. This happens by default after a certain period to conserve memory. Our application wasn't checking if the database connection was still active before using it, causing users to receive error messages.

Applied Solution:

• Database configuration updated: We updated the database settings with "pool_pre_ping=True". This ensures the application automatically tests if a database connection is still working before using it.
• Connection pool settings: The number of simultaneous database connections is set to 10 with a maximum of 20 additional connections during peak times.
• Health check added: A new "/health" page has been created that automatically monitors all critical systems (database, file storage). https://app.horecahunter.eu/health

Result:

The application should now be stable and no longer experience outages due to database connection issues. The system automatically recovers if connection problems occur.

Preventive Measures:

• Regular monitoring of the /health page
• Database connection statistics monitoring
• Automatic alerts for system issues

Addendum: Browser Cache Issue

Symptom:

After resolving the database issue, some users may still see error pages, even though the system is working normally again.

Cause:

The user's web browser has stored the old error page in memory (cache). This causes the browser to show the old, broken page instead of fetching the working website.

Solution for Users:

For Windows users:

• Chrome/Edge: Press Ctrl + Shift + R or Ctrl + F5 simultaneously
• Firefox: Press Ctrl + Shift + R simultaneously

For Mac users:

• Chrome/Safari: Press Cmd + Shift + R simultaneously
• Firefox: Press Cmd + Shift + R simultaneously

Tip: This issue disappears automatically after a few hours when the browser cache is automatically refreshed.
